‘Lexmas’ gave the producers an opportunity to test out certain situations in Lex’s dream state - particularly the notion of a Lex and Lana romance. “‘Lexmas’ was a good way to try out, ‘How will these characters work together? What will their chemistry be?’” explains episode-writer Holly Harold. “We’d always known that Lex was in love with Lana. There is a line he says in the episode to Lana: ‘I love you - have always loved you,’ a fact that has been a driving factor in his life in the subtext of the show for a long time. But we weren’t sure how the characters would play out onscreen, and this was a really good way to figure that out, and they were terrific together.”
